(our guide said they were due in two weeks). I found so much more to this wildly gorgeous island. We didn’t make it all the way to the Whirlpool of Corryvrechan,īut we did stop to see some very pregnant seals Isle of Jura is known for Jura Whisky, the imposing Paps of Jura, and its population of deer. From Barnhill it’s a few miles more north to the Corryvreckan whirlpool between the north end of Jura and the Isle of Scarba. We took a boat trip to the north end of Jura. Little walk down to the beach and then back up again. We stayed at the Jura Hotel (in the town of Craighouse), George Orwell wrote 1984 while on the north end of the island, at Barnhill. ![]() ![]() The island is roughly 29 miles long and 7 miles wide. Jura has over 5,000 deer and about 200 people. There are some good views from high and as you get closer. The ferrymen waited for us and made a special trip. En route to the Corryvreckan (Jura), Barnhill has to be passed on the single track private road. It was eventually replaced by another ferry, but we were not in time to get the last ferry to Jura. The trip from Iona to Jura was a four-ferry day – Iona to Mull to Oban to Islay to Jura.
